DANCE STYLE

DESCRIPTIONS

We are highly committed to our students having a great learning experience. It may take a little patience to make sure you learn the basics in each of the dances you chose before advancing to higher level classes but it will be worth it!

SALSA ON 2

Salsa on 2, also known as "New York Style" salsa, is a vibrant and dynamic dance style that originated in the streets of New York City. Discover the art of seamless partner connections, where you'll communicate not just through touch but through shared rhythms and emotions. Unleash your individuality as you spin, shine, and weave intricate footwork patterns, making the dance uniquely yours. Salsa on 2 is a fusion of cultures, an expression of joy, and a journey that promises to be as exciting as the city that birthed it.

Latin Hustle

A dance style that emerged in the 1970s in New York City. It's a fusion dance that combines elements of salsa, mambo, and disco dance. Latin hustle incorporates fast footwork, spins, and partner work, often set to Latin music with a disco beat.

Throughout the late 1970s, even though Hustle was still taught in many different forms (4-count Hustle, the Latin or Rope Hustle) by dance studios, the most exciting form was done by NYC club dancers and competitors who performed the 3-count count Hustle (&-1-2-3.). The NYC Hustle dancers from the ‘70s paved the way for the rest of the Hustle community across the U.S. As it continued to evolve, Hustle began to borrow from other dance styles including smooth ballroom, from which it took traveling movements and pivots and other partner dance forms such as swing and the Latin rhythm dances.

Today, Latin Hustle is danced to a wide variety of music and often incorporates elements of other dance styles and various forms of street dance. It's common to see a fusion of different movements and techniques, reflecting the evolving nature of dance and the creativity of dancers.

BACHATA

Originating in the heart of the Dominican Republic, this dance form exudes an irresistible blend of sensuality and storytelling. With its intimate connection between partners and intricate footwork, Bachata transports you to a place where music and movement intertwine, creating a dialogue of passion and expression. As you sway to the melodic tunes and embrace the art of leading and following, you'll discover the joy of sharing a genuine connection through dance.

MERENGUE

Merengue, a lively and exhilarating dance style hailing from the Dominican Republic, is a perfect choice for anyone eager to embrace the world of Latin dance. With its infectious rhythm and straightforward steps, merengue offers a fantastic entry point for beginners looking to dip their toes into the realm of dance. You'll be swept up in the music's energetic beats, forming connections with your partner and fellow dancers through the shared excitement of this rhythmic journey.

FAQs

  • We ask students to wear clothes that allow them to be comfortable and shoes with smooth soles for easy maneuvering of the dance steps.

  • Learning to dance has a varied timeline for each individual. It’s a new skill that requires practice aside from your regularly scheduled class time. Our approach hopes to have you dancing at least the fundamentals after the first two months. Will you be dancing it well? Well, that’s definitely up to you!

  • Since the classes are progressive each month, your registration covers the classes for that month and the style that you register for. At this time we do not offer replacement classes but reach out to info@somoslatindance.com and tell us your situation; we can see if we can offer an alternative solution.

  • No partner is necessary to participate in our classes. Once we reach our partner work instruction, we separate our followers from our leaders and then rotate the leaders so that everyone has a chance to dance with someone.

  • At this time, masks are not required in the class but you can wear them if you feel more comfortable. Sanitizers are provided and bathrooms are available for hand washing. Please wash your hands before entering the class.
